I've taken myself to the edges of life my way. And I'm still here. Whether or not I deserve to be is another story.
This was surprisingly good. I feel like I'm cheating on Nirvana for saying that. Oh well, whatever, never mind.
I went into Slash's autobiography blind. I knew next to nothing about him. He is quite a mysterious figure. How many of you have even seen his face? I received Guns N' Roses Welcome To The Videos dvd as a Christmas gift from my friend. A pretty cool gift, I dig their music. The real challenge was trying to catch a glimpse of Slash's face (a shame because he had such a beautiful face).
Slash had an... unconventional upbringing. He was born in England but moved to Los Angeles when he was young. His mother was an African American costume designer. Her clients included David Bowie, John Lennon and Diana Ross. His father is a white English artist. His family lived a Bohemian life style. Slash had quite a wild childhood. His early life, pre-Guns, was anything but boring. I don't want to reveal too much, so instead I'll just say – Slash, you were such a juvenile delinquent.
And things only got crazier from there. After Motley Crue's 'The Dirt' through, nothing will shock me. Guns N' Roses were a gang of heathens. Slash himself said this. They were drugged out of their minds. They f*cked shit up. But they weren't the worst kids in town. Those guys are innocent angels compared to the likes of Nikki Sixx and Tommy Lee.
Duff McKagan, Nikki Sixx and Slash. Which one do you think is the least drunk?
A word (or two) about the band.
Guns certainly didn't achieve overnight success. Those guys were struggling to survive. They were literally broke and if it weren't for the kindness of women, they would have starved to death (broke yet they could somehow afford heroin). Groupies, strippers and other well-meaning ladies took Slash and the rest of the band under their wings, making sure they had proper nutrition. Aww.
Slash might seem wild and untamed, but there's more to him than meets the eye. He's intelligent. Sensitive. He fights for animal rights. He has sobered up and quit smoking. This man used to drink at least half a gallon of Jack Daniels a day. He's come a long way since those days.
I don't believe in having regrets.
I would highly recommend this book to fans of music. In the words of The Rolling Stones : it's only rock 'n roll (but I like it).
Here's a little treat for you-
