Two worlds, two cultures, one people
In his first horror novel since the remarkable Vampire Junction, S.P. Somtow creates a wildly terrifying symphony from the clash of cultures.
In the Dakota Territory, in the 1880s, the United States was engaged in removing the savage Lakota from their homeland. It was a long war of attrition which would end at the Little Big Horn, and in a century of tears to come. But among the Lakota was a small tribal group, the Shungmanitu, from whom the Shamans were chosen. These were the people of the Wolf, the ones who could change shape at the full moon. The Shungmanitu were revered by the Lakota, and in turn they protected the tribes.
In Vienna the Graf von Wolfen is gathering together the remaining members of his family. He intends to emigrate with them to the New World, to the distant, wild plains of the West. For the Graf von Wolfen is the last leader of a pack of werewolves who have been hunted by human society almost to extinction. Too many humans have discovered their secrets; too many of the prey have learned to escape. In America the pack will be free, and the prey, ignorant savages, will be helpless before them. Already, von Wolfen’s people are building their new home in the Dakota Territory.
Caught in the middle is a young woman named Hope. She is the all-too-human governess of von Wolfen’s illegitimate son. Her love for the young boy, and her helpless fascination with the Count, force her to travel with them. And then there is the child, Johnny; raised in a madhouse and only recently discovered by his father, he is trapped in a struggle between his human and wolfish natures.
When werewolf meets shaman, between the gold-hungry settlers and the U.S. Cavalry, then blood will fly and lives will be forever changed.

Read information about the authorCalled by the Bangkok Post "the Thai person known by name to most people in the world," S.P. Somtow is an author, composer, filmmaker, and international media personality whose dazzling talents and acerbic wit have entertained and enlightened fans the world over.
He was Somtow Papinian Sucharitkul in Bangkok. His grandfather's sister was a Queen of Siam, his father is a well known international lawyer and vice-president of the International Academy of Human Rights. Somtow was educated at Eton and Cambridge, and his first career was in music. In the 1970s (while he was still in college) his works were being performed on four continents and he was named representative of Thailand to the Asian Composer's League and to the International Music Commission of UNESCO. His avant-garde compositions caused controversy and scandal in his native country, and a severe case of musical burnout in the late 1970s precipitated his entry into a second career - that of author.
He began writing science fiction, but soon started to invade other fields of writing, with some 40 books out now, including the clasic horror novel Vampire Junction, which defined the "rock and roll vampire" concept for the 80s, the Riverrun Trilogy ("the finest new series of the 90's" - Locus) and the semi-autobiographical memoir Jasmine Nights. He has won or been nominated for dozens of major awards including the Bram Stoker Award, the John W. Campbell Award, the Hugo Award, and the World Fantasy Award.
Somtow has also made some incursions into filmmaking, directing the cult classic The Laughing Dead and the award winning art film Ill Met by Moonlight.
